Special Structure — Not a Standard ETF Score
This product's legal and economic structure differs from a standard open-end ETF, so this site's ordinary ETF scoring model does not apply and would produce a misleading result if forced onto it. This is a structural classification, not an assessment of quality.
Legal Structure
grantor trust (New York), registered under the Securities Act of 1933, not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940.
What This Product Owns / Tracks
iShares Silver Trust (NYSE Arca: SLV) is organized as a grantor trust, not an investment company -- registered under the Securities Act of 1933 but explicitly not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Each share represents a fractional, undivided beneficial interest in the trust's physical silver bullion holdings. Shares are created and redeemed only in large blocks ('Baskets') by Authorized Participants in exchange for silver bullion, not cash.
Exposure Mechanism
SLV holds only physical silver bullion -- no securities, derivatives, or futures contracts. The Sponsor's fee is 0.50% per annum of the trust's net asset value, disclosed in the trust's Form 10-K filed with the SEC.
Key Structural Risks
As a grantor trust rather than a registered investment company, SLV does not carry the same regulatory framework as a conventional ETF. Shareholders bear silver-price risk directly with no underlying operating business or income; the Sponsor's fee is paid by periodically selling small amounts of the trust's silver, so the silver represented per share gradually declines over time. Silver held through a grantor trust is generally treated as a collectible for US federal tax purposes, which can carry different capital-gains tax treatment than typical equity ETFs -- a structural/tax characteristic of bullion trusts generally, not individual tax advice.
Why No Standard ETF Score Is Available
SLV is not scored under this site's etf_sec_v1 open-end-fund model: that model's categories are built around N-PORT holdings disclosure and Investment Company Act fund structures, neither of which applies to a grantor trust holding a single physical commodity. No numerical score is available for SLV on this site.
