Fund Overview
XSP is a U.S. large-cap equity index fund managed by BlackRock Canada that adds a currency-hedging overlay, intended to reduce the effect of Canadian-dollar/U.S.-dollar exchange-rate movements on the fund's returns relative to an unhedged equivalent.
Index Strategy
XSP tracks the S&P 500 Index, hedged to the Canadian dollar, using currency forward contracts to offset most of the CAD/USD exchange-rate exposure that an unhedged U.S. equity fund would otherwise carry. Index membership and weights are set by S&P Dow Jones Indices, an independent third-party index provider.
Geographic Exposure
All underlying holdings are large-capitalization companies listed on U.S. exchanges; the fund's U.S.-dollar currency exposure is substantially hedged back to the Canadian dollar.
Principal Risks
As a market-capitalization-weighted U.S. large-cap index fund with a currency-hedging overlay, XSP.TO carries general equity-market risk and sector-concentration risk common to its target index. The hedging strategy is intended to reduce, not eliminate, the effect of Canadian-dollar/U.S.-dollar exchange-rate movements on returns, and hedging itself introduces additional derivative-counterparty and tracking considerations relative to an unhedged fund.
